Learn to identify 185 species with 3,378 photos

Study books only show a limited number of photos per species. Before long, I noticed I was calling species by the picture instead of by the animal’s true field marks. Identifying a mallard by the reeds in the photo doesn’t help anyone. That’s why I built the Photoquiz in 2010/2011. By making myself call out species in random order and from a random photo every time, I got that skill down fast—and that part of the hunting theory exam became a walk in the park. Even now, as an experienced hunter, I still use the Photoquiz. I rely on it especially when I hunt abroad or go into a region where markedly different species occur. Fair Chase comes first in hunting, and with this quiz I reduce the risk of mistakes.. Pro tip: learn to call species with the Photoquiz, and alongside that—or afterwards—take your binoculars into the field. That’s the fastest way to make it stick.
